From the Anchoreta collection, an exhibition inspired by 13th Century books and various documentation of various Anchoresses and Anchorites lives, philosophies and stories. People who locked themselves away from the rest of the world to be one with God.

In the Ancrene Wisse, a book written in the 13th century as an almost guide to being an Anchoress, it advises that becoming one is like following the path of David in Psalms where he took himself into solitude in the wilderness. In older versions of the bible saying “for I am like the Pelican” (newer versions do not have this same quote it seems!)
